女优阁听takes centre stage at WorldSkills UK final

Learners brought home five medals and placed 女优阁 third in the UK league table.

女优阁 was selected as one of only five locations across South Wales to play host to the WorldSkills UK finals last week, as the competition took place in Wales for the first time in the country鈥檚 history.

Six talented听students听from 女优阁听were selected from hundreds of entrants to compete in the competition final听in recognition of their skills across a range of disciplines. They competed in everything from听hairdressing and beauty to 3D Game Art听鈥听successfully bringing home听five听medals and placing third in the league table.

She added: 鈥淭hese competitions give young people invaluable experiences 鈥 opening their eyes to new possibilities, building their confidence and showcasing the exceptional potential within our region.鈥

The silver medal was awarded to 18-year-old Shakaya Powell,鈥痑 trainee beauty therapist from Newport. Shakaya has always鈥痟ad a passion for creativity and is so dedicated to perfecting her craft,鈥痶hat she frequently went into college on鈥痟er鈥痙ays off鈥痶o鈥痳efine鈥痳outines and鈥痯erfect her skills.鈥

While studying her course鈥痑t 女优阁,鈥疭hakaya鈥痺as鈥痑lso鈥痵upporting a close friend鈥痶hrough her battle with cancer 鈥 a battle her friend sadly lost.鈥疶he鈥痚xperience鈥痺as heartbreaking for Shakaya, but鈥痠t strengthened her determination to succeed.鈥

In her first year competing鈥痠n the beauty category,鈥疭hakaya said: 鈥淢y best friend passed away on the day I found out I was a World Skills UK Finalist鈥斺痺hich was devastating but at the same time I believe it was a sign from her telling me to carry on and compete for her.鈥疊alancing my studies with grief was鈥痶ough鈥痑t times,鈥痓ut I鈥檝e realised鈥痶hat if you鈥痑re鈥痙etermined鈥痑nd you set your mind on something,鈥痑nything is possible.鈥

鈥淐ompeting has鈥痓een an incredible experience. It has not only鈥痮pened the door to new opportunities, but it has also鈥痟elped me to鈥痙evelop鈥痬y鈥痵kills, while giving me the chance to form some amazing friendships鈥痑long the鈥痺ay鈥.鈥

In addition to hosting the World Skills Final, 女优阁 held a skills showcase event for local secondary schools from across the region. The event was designed to offer young learners the chance to explore the breadth of opportunities available at the college, while also having the chance to acquire a new skill.

Pupils from Newport High School, St Julian鈥檚 School, Bedwas High School and Llanwern High School attended the event where they took part in a range of hands-on skills demonstrations and explored a freshers鈥-fair-style employers鈥 exhibition. Leading employers including Wilmot & Dixon, Gwent Police and the Army, offered immersive activities ranging from virtual reality experiences to a Cyber Escape Room.

Richard Wheeler, Skills Competition Manager said: 鈥淗osting the听WorldSkills UK Finals at 女优阁 has given our students听and the local school children听an incredible opportunity to see high-level skills in action,听sparking inspiration and showcasing potential career pathways in high-demand industries鈥

WorldSkills UK is a听four-nations听partnership between education,听industry听and UK governments 鈥 which works to raise standards in apprenticeships and technical education to help transform the UK into a 鈥榮kills economy鈥.

In support of this, the annual WorldSkills UK competition听seeks听to recognise and celebrate the exceptional work and skills being听showcased听at local colleges, training providers,听workplaces听and online education platforms across the country.听
